Why Must This Sign Be Placed Next To Substations, Distribution Rooms And Transformers? The Consequences Of Not Displaying It Are Worse Than You Think.

Jun 15, 2026

As you pass a nearby substation, have you notice the yellow sign in the middle of the substation with black letters and lightning bolt?
Most people take one look and walk away thinking, "That's just a sign."
But let me tell you, this sign is not just decorative, it is a legally mandated "lifesaver." Otherwise, the company can be fined up to 200000 yuan, the person in charge can be fined up to 200000 yuan, if the circumstances are serious, production can be stopped and rectified. If someone dies, there will be criminal liability.
This is not to frighten you, this is a black-and-white provision in the * * Safety at Work Law * * of the People's Republic of China.
I. What does the law say? It's illegal not to display it, there's no negotiation.
Article 35 of the * * Safety at Work Law * * clearly stipulates that production and business business entities shall set up visible safety warning signs on production and business premises and relevant facilities and equipment with significant risk factors.
Substations, distribution rooms and transformers-aren't they all places with "significant risk factors"? Internal operating voltage can easily reach thousands of volts; accidental contact could lead to death or serious injury. It is illegal not to put up warning signs.
Article 99. Those who fail to set up visible safety warning signs shall be ordered to make corrections within a time limit and shall be fined not more than 50,000 yuan; those who fail to make corrections within the time limit shall be fined not the specified period than 50,000 yuan but not more than 200,000 yuan, and the persons directly in charge and other persons directly responsible shall be fined not less than 10,000 yuan but not more than 20,000 yuan. If the circumstances are serious, the company shall be ordered to stop production and work for rectification, and if the case constitutes a crime, criminal responsibility shall be investigated in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Criminal Law.
A few dollars a sign can result in a fine of hundreds of thousands of dollars or even jail time. It is painful to consider the cost.
ii. Real cases: Some people have been fined
Don't think it's an overreaction, look at the actual penalty records.
In August 2023 the Emergency Management Bureau Agency enforcement officers found no visible safety warning signs at the entrance to a high-voltage distribution room at Qianyuan Commercial Management Co., Ltd., in Chenxi, Beijing. A fine of 10,000 yuan shall be imposed directly in accordance with the Beijing Municipal Standard for the Discretionary Determination of Administrative Penalties for Production Safety.
In March 2021, law enforcement officers found three distribution boxes of 380V and above and one 400V without a safety warning sign in an electric utility warehouse. The company, a specialist electrical technology company, was fully aware of the requirements of national standard GB 2894-2008 but ignored the issue due to a "failure to address the drop in humid season in a timely manner." He was eventually fined $25,000.
But the worst is yet to come. A Shenzhen jewelry company has been found guilty of 11 safety hazards, including "failing to display clear safety warning signs on equipment with significant risk factors." After the deadline, a follow-up inspection found that the problem persisted, and the company was fined $60,000 and the factory manager $10,000. Another hardware spring company was found to have 11 devices without warning signs in its second-floor workshop, resulting in a total fine of 50,000 yuan.
You see, it's not 'it doesn't matter if you wear it or not', it's' it doesn't matter if you wear it or not '-and the consequences are much worse than you imagine.
III. How should the signs be placed? It's not enough to slap up any signs.
Many companies are fined not for not posting any signs, but for not posting them correctly, which amounts to not posting at all.
According to GB 2894-2008 "Safety Signs and Guidelines for their Use and DL/T1198-2012 Code of Safety Alert Signs for Power Systems, high-voltage hazard warning signs must meet the following strict requirements:
Color must be correct: The warning sign is a yellow triangle with black border and black lightning bolt symbol in the middle. Is the handwritten "Warning: Electric" marked? No, it was considered "no sign" during inspection.
Location must be correct: Signs must be placed prominently in front of the fence to ensure they are visible when closed. Put it on the side or back, only visible when the door opens? This is called "delayed warning" and negates the purpose of proactive prevention.
Material must be correct: Signage on outdoor substation and transformer fences must be waterproof, sun resistant, reflective, and preferably luminescent. Indoor distribution rooms must also use at least PVC supported by adhesives, resistant to oil stains and not easy to peel. The faded, fuzzy, rain-soaked old signs were practically useless.
The content must be accurate. The standard wording for transformer fences is "STOP!" High Voltage Danger!"Yes, sir. "Beware of electric shocks" should be marked on the distribution box. These shouldnot be confused, omitted, or replaced with homemade text rather than standard graphics.
IV. INTRODUCTION Conclusion:
A high-pressure hazard warning sign costs less than $10, but it can protect a person's life, a family and the future of a business.
Which fined companies aren't taking risks? Thinking "unlikely," they found themselves fined before any incident occurred.
Don't wait for the fine to arrive to remember the yellow sign. Check your distribution room, substation, and transformer-is that lightning bolt symbol still there? Is it still visible?
If the answer is "no," you should take action
